SEATTLE - The Better Business Bureau has named the 12 most outstanding businesses in Western Washington.
Among the car dealerships and financial institutions and restaurants, is one that might surprise you --a hair salon.
Studio 904, with locations in Pioneer Square and on Mercer Island, looks like many other upscale salons, but this one is different.
Stylists work for a salary, not a commission, so clients aren't rushed through haircuts or pressured to buy more services. But more unusual: there is a no tipping policy.
"I like that, because it's always a problem knowing how much to give. So you come in here, pay one price and feel confident that everyone is happy," said customer Pam Cole.
Customers also pay a flat fee for a hair cuts or services, regardless of who performs it or what the style.
"There are no hidden charges, no tipping, no add ons, so when a customer comes in , they know exactly what to pay," said owner, Kay Hirai.
Hirai offers her own hair product line. Five percent of proceeds are donated to charity each month. The salon also gives free cuts and color to low income women preparing for the workforce and to low income kids.
